Thing #23

Is this the end or the beginning? It depends on how you look at it. It's been tough at times. The frustration of learning new things can be overwhelming when a person is very busy with work, family, and other obligations. Participating in 23 Things taught me that while not every thing I explored will be used, some will be used occasionally. The best thing about 23 Things is the realization that while learning new things can be challenging, you can learn, even if it takes time and help from friends and coworkers. So again, is this the end or the beginning? It's up to me to decide whether or not to be a lifelong learner. For me, it's the beginning!!!

Thing #22

I found several ebooks that would be interesting to download, but I agree with some fellow bloggers that it would be difficult to explain to patrons the ins and outs of licensing, how to download, renewals, etc. While some people would tremendously enjoy listening to an ebook, I personally like to just curl up with a good book in my hand. I'm kind of old school, but I also realize that for some people, ebooks are a great way to go.

Thing #21

Podcasts are not my thing. I had trouble from step one and had to have help. I did find one podcast on maggot medicine. Fascinating creatures. Did you know they breathe through their backside so they can bury their head in their work? I really don't think I found anything useful in the podcasts, but I'm sure others have found them useful.

Thing #20

There are so many videos to watch on You Tube, but the video I chose is Batman: The Dark Knight. I chose a movie video because my son is a movie buff, and he can't wait to see this movie. I also viewed the library videos that were suggested. The first one was a little long, but I think it's a good way to promote the library if people will watch.

Thing #19

Well, Flickr is what I chose from the Award List and amazingly, I remembered how to add an image. This was fun and informative.

Thing #18

I like the idea of being able to access something that a lot of people are working on without waiting on an update by e-mail. It would really save time to be able to check for updates without too much fuss.

Thing #17

My wiki experience was a little shaky at first, but with a little help, I managed to edit and add a favorite restaurant and favorite website. The more I did, the easier it became.

Thing #16

I never knew what a wiki was until now. I really liked the book lovers wiki. I can see the benefit of patron reviews on the card catalog. People love word of mouth recommendations usually, and book reviews from your fellow library patrons can carry a lot of weight.

Thing #15

Web 2.0 - Being connected 24/7 is great for some people, but I personally like to be disconnected from everything so I can enjoy the people and world around me.

Library 2.0 - Libraries are constantly changing, and they must constantly change or they become stagnant and unable to serve the community. Community participation is vital as it gives people a feeling of ownership in their library. In turn, they are more supportive of their library and positive changes made to better serve them. I know some people do not like change, but we must move forward if we are to serve ALL patrons.

Thing #14

Doing a Google Book Search is easy, and I can see how it would benefit the library. I located several books on baseball, and by searching the table of contents, I was able to determine which book I thought would be more interesting. I will be using Google Book Search more often now.

Thing #13

I explored Del.icio.us, and I don't think it would be something I would use very often. I don't see this being extremely useful in a library setting.

Thing #12

I found an article on brain implants in monkeys that would allow them to use a robotic arm to retrieve marshmallows from various locations to eat. Researchers are hoping that this will help humans eventually in the use of prosthetics. One stumbling block is that the electrodes can become embedded in the brain causing scar tissue.

For my incentive, I choose the MP3 Player.

Thing #11

I explored Digg, and if you have the time, well you might want to check out this awesome coffee stirrer lamp. It really shows what we can do with recycling if we use our creative juices. We can create a work of art.

I've completed number 10 and have started my good reads list. This will certainly be very helpful to me in the future. I've got to go back to work now so I will do a link later.

Thing #9

Thing #9 has by far been my FAVORITE THING!! I found this easy and fun. I will definitely be using this in the future. I made the above motivational poster all by myself. I am so proud to have learned something new and useful. Yahoo!! It's on to #10 next week.

Thing #8

Thing #8 has been fun. I especially liked looking at all the different mashup opportunities. Delivr is probably what I will use most since I like sending e-cards to friends. It was quick and easy with no fuss. Well, it's on to #9!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thing #7

Okay, I have explored Flickr, and found a picture of a tree that I really liked. I added it to my blog home page. I searched for Cades Cove images until just the right image grabbed my attention. I also found a way of doing a slideshow of Cades Cove images from Flickr. I will be visiting the park soon, and I might even take pictures to add of my own.

7 1/2 habits

I got so carried away with creating my blog, I really didn't comment on the 7 1/2 learning habits. I like beginning with the end in mind. It gives me an ultimate goal that I look forward to each time I try something new. One big thing for me is having fun while learning. It helps me enjoy what I am learning. Right now, I am moving on to things 7, 8, and 9 and I am confident that I will enjoy them.

Things 5 & 6

Whew, I found 5 and 6 a little challenging, but I persevered with a little help from a book nerd. I am learning so much already, and I think it will be great to be able to access my blog, and have all my feeds right there. Maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks. I know I am certainly learning new tricks right now. I will be adding new feeds later when I have more time. Duty is calling right now, and I must get back to work.

Lifelong Learning

Cheers to everyone completing 23 things--it's gonna be fun!!
